Download Pdf Previewer For Outlook 2016

Hi guys,

When I open an email in Office Professional Plus 2013 on Windows 10 Pro v21H1 and click on a PDF file attachment I get the error message "This file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it". The same issue occurs in Explorer.

Reinstalling Adobe Acrobat Reader DC I now can see the preview of a PDF in Explorer.

I have also made sure that Adobe Acrobat Reader DC was the default app.

I have tried turning off Protected Mode in Adobe.

I have also run a quick repair on the Office install, no change.

When I look in the Trust Center for Outlook I see that "PDF Preview Handler" is not listed, but everything I'm reading says it should:

Anyone know how I get it to come back?

This is what it should look like:

FWIW, I have the same scenario with one of my machines.

There must be some way of adding the handler.

I have removed Acrobat. I have done a full repair of Office 365. I have re-installed Acrobat.

Still missing.

I ended up using the Adobe Acrobat Cleanup Tool and manually deleting any left-over Adobe Acrobat Reader folders on the hard drive. It seems that the auto-install system we have called PDQ was pushing a second MUI copy out while the non-MUI version was already installed and they were locking each other out of being able to full integrate with Outlook.

Joy...

I'll give that a go.

Thanks

Hi Bob,

I have a user experiencing the same issue this morning, just wondering if you were able to resolve the problem?

thanks

DrBobs

Thanks for the question, yes, I found a solution.

Unfortunately, none of the solutions posted here fixed the problem.

This isn't a foolproof fix, but here it goes:

It is necessary to match the 'bits' of Outlook to that of Acrobat (Reader or Full).  So if you have 64 bit Office installed, you need the 64 bit version of Acrobat, and if you have the 32 bit version of Office installed you need the 32 bit version of Acrobat.

Once they match, the preview handler appears.

But, here are the catches:

1 - Office defaults to 32 bits irrespective of your OS.

2 - Acrobat defaults to match your OS.

So, if you fix your Acrobat problem by installing say the 32 bit version, Acrobat will then almost instantly upgrade itself to the 64 bit version breaking things and re-creating the problem.

The only fix I have found is a registry change to prevent auto updating.  Not nice given Adobe's security track record, but for now it solves my problem.

See https://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/PrefRef/Windows/Updater-Win.html?zoom_highlight=u...

In registry at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\Legacy\Reader\{AC76BA86-7AD7-1033-7B44-AC0F074E4100}
The key Mode can be set to:
0 = Do not download or install updates automatically
1 = same as 0
2 = Automatically download but let user choose when to install
3 = Automatically download and install updates (default)
4 = Notify user downloads available but do not download them

So I set mine to '0'.

I hope that helps.

Yep, 32/64 bit issue. Works after 32bit reinstalled.

<sigh....> Wonderful, isn't it...

That is interesting. I had assumed it was an MUI vs non-MUI version issue, but I didn't think that it might be a 32-bit vs 64-bit issue. For us we install 32-bit Office because we have some older 32-bit plugins.

1PC Pty Ltd is an IT service provider.

OK, I have a further update from Adobe.

See this discussion: https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-reader-discussions/how-can-i-make-32-bit-reader-update-to-onl...

But the solution for a 32 bit Office and a 64 bit Acrobat/Reader is to add these registry entries:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}]
"DisplayName"="@C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Acrobat DC\\Acrobat\\pdfprevhndlr.dll,-101"
"AppID"="{6d2b5079-2f0b-48dd-ab7f-97cec514d30b}"
@="Adobe PDF Preview Handler for Vista"
"DisableLowILProcessIsolation"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}\InprocServer32]
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
@="C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Acrobat DC\\Acrobat\\pdfprevhndlr.dll"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}\ProgID]
@="PDFPrevHndlr.PDFPreviewHandler.1"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}\TypeLib]
@="{0F6D3808-7974-4B1A-94C2-3200767EACE8}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}\VersionIndependentProgID]
@="PDFPrevHndlr.PDFPreviewHandler"

Alternatively, you can download the .reg file shared below and double click on it and registry entries would be automatically created.

According to the Adobe person this will be in the next quarterly Acrobat update.

I have tried it and it works.  Of course, turn back on the auto-update if you have disabled it.

Thanks Bob.

That did the trick.
